Fire Agency Profile – Village of Morton Grove [MAP]

The Village of Morton Grove is a northern suburb of Chicago with a population of 23,270, located 13 miles north of “The Loop.” The Village is primarily residential, but also has industrial and commercial areas as well as award-winning parks and schools. Twenty percent of the land is owned by the Cook County Forest Preserve District, and is available for the recreation and enjoyment of residents and neighboring cities.

The starting salary for a Morton Grove firefighter is currently $62,127 for a firefighter and $66,763 for a firefighter/paramedic. Morton Grove anticipates hiring firefighters over the course of the next two years.

Eligibility Requirements

The Morton Grove Board of Fire and Police Commissioners is charged with the appointment of all firefighters. To be considered for employment, candidates must meet the following requirements:

Hold a High School Diploma/GED;
Be 21 years of age, but under 35 years of age by the date of the written exam (September 6, 2014), unless otherwise exempt by State statute;
Be a U.S. Citizen or alien admitted for permanent residence or lawfully admitted for temporary residence and who produces evidence of intention to become a citizen of the U.S.;
Possess a valid driver’s license;
Submit proof that they have passed the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) and Aerial Ladder Climb within a ONE YEAR PERIOD prior to the date of the written examination (valid if issued September 6, 2013 – September 6, 2014);
Vision: 20/30 corrected, 20/100 uncorrected, able to identify/distinguish between red, green and yellow;
In order to complete the probationary period, candidates must have obtained Illinois State Basic Operations Firefighter Certification and Illinois EMT-Paramedic Certification.

Fire Agency Profile – Village of Niles [MAP]

The Village of Niles is an established suburban community incorporated in 1889. The community population is 29,803, with 12,125 households, a median age of 47.3, and a median income of $50,829. Niles is located in northeastern Cook County, immediately adjacent to Chicago, 6.5 square miles in area and is centrally intersected by Milwaukee Avenue (Route #21). The Village contains a balance between industrial and commercial establishments and a mixture of residential areas including single family, apartments, town houses and condominiums. Also included are 15 parks, 2 park pools, ice rink, golf course, and a municipal Senior and Fitness Center complex. The Village has a Class III ISO fire protection rating.


The salary range for a Niles firefighter is currently $59,324 to $72,108, commensurate with qualifications. Niles anticipates hiring firefighters over the course of the next two years.

Eligibility Requirements

The Niles Board of Fire and Police Commissioners is charged with the appointment of all firefighters. To be considered for employment, candidates must meet the following requirements:

High School Diploma or equivalent (GED);
21 to under 35 years of age by date of written exam (September 6, 2014), unless otherwise exempt by state statute;
U.S. Citizen OR applied for citizenship, contemplating residing the in U.S.;
Valid driver’s license;
Submit proof that they have passed the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) and Aerial Ladder Climb within a ONE YEAR PERIOD prior to the date of the written examination (valid if issued September 6, 2013 – September 6, 2014);
Vision correctable to 20/20 and free from color blindness;
Residency: required within six months after completing one-year probation - boundary limits: Wisconsin state line on the north, the shoreline of Lake Michigan and the Indiana state line on the east, state highway 30 on the south and route 47 on the west.

Fire Agency Profile – City of Park Ridge [MAP]

The City of Park Ridge is a progressive, upper-middle class residential community of 37,450 residents in an area of 7.0 square miles, bordering the northwest corner of the City of Chicago. Park Ridge is known for its excellent schools, park facilities, tree-lined streets, quality of life and easy access to major transportation centers including O’Hare International Airport. Park Ridge is home to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, one of the Chicago area’s major trauma and healthcare centers. The City has a Class III ISO rating.


The current starting salary for a Park Ridge Firefighter/Paramedic is currently $60,514. Park Ridge anticipates hiring firefighters over the course of the next two years.

Eligibility Requirements

At least 21 years of age and under 35 year of age at time of written exam (September 6, 2014), unless otherwise exempt by statute;
No felony convictions;
High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED);
U.S. Citizen;
Valid Driver’s License;
Current and Valid IDPH EMT-Paramedic license at time of application;
Current and Valid CPAT card issued by a licensed agency within a ONE YEAR PERIOD prior to written exam date (valid if issued September 6, 2013 – September 6, 2014). CPAT card must also be valid at time of hire.

Fire Agency Profile – Village of Wilmette [MAP]

The Village of Wilmette is a progressive upper-middle class residential community with a population of 27,000 and an area of 5.4 square miles. Located along Lake Michigan’s shoreline just north of Chicago, Wilmette has long been noted for its beautiful lakefront. Historic architecture, beautiful parks and beaches, tree-lined streets, and attractive shopping areas make Wilmette one of Chicago’s most popular suburbs. Wilmette is also known for its quality public services, outstanding school system, economic stability, and progressive governmental leadership.


The starting salary ranges in Wilmette are currently $62,519 for a firefighter and $66,959 for a firefighter/paramedic.

Eligibility Requirements

The Wilmette Board of Fire and Police Commissioners is charged with the appointment of all firefighters. To be considered for employment, candidates must meet the following requirements:

Hold a High School Diploma/GED PLUS one of the following:
Sixty (60) hours of education from an accredited college/university;
Two (2) years Military service;
Illinois State Fire Marshall’s Firefighter II/Basic Operations Firefighter Certification;
Current EMT-Paramedic license from any state or national registration;
Possess a valid driver’s license;
Be a U.S. Citizen;
Be 21 years of age, but under 35 years of age by the date of the written exam (September 6, 2014), unless otherwise exempt by State statute;
Submit proof that they have passed the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) and Aerial Ladder Climb within a ONE YEAR PERIOD prior to the date of the written examination (valid if issued September 6, 2013 – September 6, 2014).

All applications and required documents must be submitted to Selection Works by 4:00 p.m. on AUGUST 11, 2014 OR YOU WILL BE CONSIDERED INELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE in the testing process. You are wholly responsible for ensuring the completeness and accuracy of your application. If you are applying to more than one department, it is your responsibility to make sure you meet the minimum requirements for EACH department and that you submit the documentation required by EACH department.

Testing Process

The candidate orientation and written exam will be conducted on SEPTEMBER 6, 2014 at NIPSTA, 2300 Patriot Blvd., Glenview, IL 60026. You are required to arrive at the testing location no later than 8:30 a.m. with photo identification (valid driver’s license or State ID)to sign-in. The mandatory orientation will begin promptly 9:00 a.m. and testing will immediately follow; NO LATE ADMITTANCE. Candidates will be eligible to participate in the written exam ONLY IF they have submitted the application and required documents by AUGUST 11, 2014.


The testing process will consist of two tests: 1) a traditional firefighter examination that assesses cognitive ability and behavioral characteristics and 2) a scenario-based skills assessment that assesses job-related skills.
