The online application and required documentation must be submitted to IOS Recruitment by July 13, 2016 at 4:00 PM.
Minimum Requirements:
  • $40.00 non-refundable application fee
  • U.S. Citizen or an alien admitted for permanent residence or lawfully admitted for temporary residence who produces evidence of intention to become a citizen of the United States
  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Valid driver's license
  • 21 years of age and less than 35 years of age at time of application deadline (7/13/16), unless otherwise provided by State or Federal Law, local ordinance or resolution
  • Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) Certificate that includes Ladder Climb, current within the last calendar year from time of application deadline (7/13/16). Applicants that obtain a ranking on the final eligibility list and are notified of a conditional offer of employment whose CPAT certification card has expired may be required to successfully pass the test again, prior to advancing in the hiring process. Applicants are responsible for all costs associated with the certification. Cards accepted from all licensed agencies
  • Illinois licensed EMT-P at time of hire (applicants enrolled in a State of IL IDPH approved paramedic program shall be allowed to complete the testing process. Applicants must provide proof of enrollment in the program by submitting a letter from the organization sponsoring their enrollment or by the course administrator, on their letterhead)
  • Illinois State Fire Marshal certified Basic Operations/Firefighter II certification

DeKalb Receives New Pierce Tower Ladder Truck from Weston Fire Rescue (Florida)

After almost 26 years, the city of DeKalb, Illinois has replaced a ladder truck they call "Big John" with a 6-year-old used tower ladder truck from Weston Fire Rescue in Weston, Florida. The ladder truck was purchased with financial assistance from Northern Illinois University (NIU).

"Big John" was custom built for the city of DeKalb in 1989, and was named after captain John Isom, who died of cancer the year the truck was delivered.

Buying a new tower ladder truck would have cost about $1 million. Refurbishing Big John would have cost about $650,000.

The Weston tower truck was purchased in late 2008 or early 2009 with four new fire engines and five new EMS ambulances.

STARTING SALARY between $48,110 and $50,394 based on experience. Additional $3,259 per year for those employed as EMTs; $9,343 for Paramedics. Incentive pay for those assigned to special teams.

NATURE OF WORK:

General job functions include; (1) Firefighting - Emergency; (2) Firefighting - Non-Emergency; (3) Emergency Medical Services; (4) Work Related Activities. This job is located in the Field Operations Bureau of the Orlando Fire Department and is under the general supervision of the Company Commander. Firefighters will perform individually and/or as a member of a firefighting team and will participate in fire suppression activities including firefighting, rescue, first aid, ventilation, forcible entry, salvage, overhaul, and inspection practices.

THE CITY OF ORLANDO is looking for highly motivated, professional individuals who are seeking a long-term career in fire/rescue. The City of Orlando Fire Department (OFD) provides the community a full range of fire suppression, emergency medical service, hazardous materials management, dive rescue, high angle/below grade tactical rescue, and airport rescue services. The OFD also offers fire prevention/inspection services, city-wide disaster planning and coordination, and public education. The department answers more than 50,000 alarms each year and operates 18 engines, seven tower-ladder trucks, eleven rescues, one heavy rescue and multiple other specialized units (dive, hazmat, arson/bomb, etc.).
